L'été précédant leur entrée en cinquième, elles fuient leur petite ville de Royston, dans le Massachusetts, par le biais de l'imagination. Enfoui au milieu d'une forêt subsiste un ancien asile dans lequel elles s'inventent des vies dangereuses. Et puis le quotidien reprend son cours, elles ne sont plus dans la même classe, se font de nouveaux amis et s'éloignent peu à peu. Élève studieuse, Julia se prépare pour le concours d'éloquence tandis que Cassie entame de mauvaises fréquentations.
